Kennett Post 491 Wins Opener Against Westtown

The #1 seed Post 491 had its hands full in the opening round and had to overcome a sluggish start in order to advance in the winner’s bracket of the 2019 Chester County Legion Playoffs. The visiting Westtown team had its eyes set on being the spoiler.

Starter Matt McCloskey ran into some bad luck in the top of the first allowing 2 R, neither of which were earned. But, the Kennett offense immediately started chipping away at the Westtown lead. Grant Hineman led off the bottom of the first with a walk and a stolen base. Hineman then made it to third on an attempted pickoff. But, Hineman would get thrown out at the plate on a Jeremy Sauerbaum ground ball. But, Nate Holt’s two out single would later score Sauerbaum.

Alex Wisniewski would enter the game in the third, replacing McCloskey on the mound. He overcame a defensive error and some control problems, and he was able to get out of the third only allowing 1 ER (0 ER).

The score was 3-1 with an upset in the making, until the Kennett bats came alive in the fourth. Two leadoff walks followed by a beautiful Tim Kratz bunt loaded the bases. Owen Geiger would also walk scoring the first Kennett run of the inning. Hineman would plate another with a SAC fly. Kratz and Geiger then scored on a wild pitch and an error. When the dust settled, Post 491 held a 5-3 lead.

Kratz entered for Wisniewski and was brilliant in relief. He would go three innings, allowing 0 R. And, ultimately, in the sixth, Kennett would blow the game open. Two walks along with singles by Geiger, Hineman and Holt would plate two more runs. Conner Brookes then launched a double to the left center fence scoring another. Joe Ajalli capped off the inning with an RBI ground out. That pushed the run total to 10 and would be plenty to secure the victory.

Nate Holt led the team with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Sauerbaum and Vinnie Basciani both reached base 3 times, and Sauerbaum scored 2 runs.

The team will play its next playoff game on Tuesday at 6pm.
